Lesson 18 - My First Solo - CGT
Written by Administrator
Thursday, 12 November 2009

How good is this! I've made it to my first SOLO!! The early part of my day was a bit ordinary and I didn't feel that flash as I arrived for another lesson, but I'm here, why not? After all, Matt tells me we are just going out to do some more forced landing practice. I wonder if this was a ruse or he really did just change his mind on the spot..??
So off we go, CIRCUITS. And for some reason, I'm in the groove. My radio calls are correct, my checklists just roll out, and best of all I'm flying the thing like a pro!! Charlie Golf Tango - you beauty!!
After a few circuits, Matt calls something I've not heard before - "Full Stop - Returning" or something like that.. So I land again, taxi back, all the time expecting this is park and depart to the bar. But no, he tells me I'm not a danger to myself or anyone else and it's time to do a lap on my own.
The rest you can see.
I'm on top of the world.
This is as good as my first heliski day, and better than (almost!) anything else. Matt - thanks for the "Tough Love" along the way. Many more lessons to go, but now I feel like I'm a pilot (with a lot to learn!)

Leaving Home

The plane in Melbourne was late leaving because the air con broke down, so they had to fix that, and hence late into Sydney. (more on this later). I just made the international out of Sydney. So far so good. I had organised the very back row 2 seats and so had them to myself. At 190cm it's still a bit(!) cramped, and the guy in the seat in front kept getting up to get something from his overhead locker every hour or so. Being a short-arse (the guy in front - not me), he had to stand close to the seats to reach up and stood on my toes every bloody time!! Anyway, I eventually worked out that one of the rows in the middle had three seats free and the guy in the fourth seat didn't mind me stretching (if you can call getting 190cm to fit into 140cm stretching) out across the three. Arriving in LA

Probably only slept an hour at most. Crappy but normal so far. THEN, I got through customs in LA, but found out that my ski bag (2 pairs of skis, jacket, gloves, sox, etc) were left in Sydney (because of the "more on this later "above) Shit, thinks I! No matter, I can always hire skis for a day which gives me a chance to try out something new, and Hey, if I need a new jacket, I just need a new jacket.

Losing Mike

OK, shitty but normal flight, and some lost luggage. Not good, but not too bad, The skis will turn up tomorrow probably, and I've got an excuse for a new jacket. Mike meets me in LA at the Delta terminal (he was on a different flight over to LA). We wait a bit, boarding passes in hand. I get on at the last moment (no sense in rushing) then I sit in the assigned seat, expecting Mike to arrive and take the one next to me. But some little old Mexican lady, speaking no English, plops her fat bum down where Mike should be, then her litte fat Mexican husband plops down next to her. Gotta be a mistake, surely. They can't understand the letters and numbers, or, more commonly, they are just plain dumb. BUT NO! Mike has been bumped off the flight! Being the last to board he is the latest Delta victim of chronic overbooking. ?

SHIT!

Arriving in Salt Lake

The plane takes off, No idea when Mike will get to Salt Lake. Lucky the phone works over here. I call our mate Robin. To cut a longer story short, It ends up Mike gets in about 4 hours later, but is waiting outside in the snow, while I'm looking for him inside. We meet up eventually and here we are. {atipsjp 13|numberWords}some text{/atipsjp}

And.. the car!

Oh, but I forgot the hire car drama. I had pre-paid for the car, but the travel agent had forgotten to give me the required coupons. I called them a few days ago and they said, "Don't worry, we will fax over everything you need to the Hertz desk at the airport". No fax... I have now paid $AU1038 AND $US1781 for the same car. That travel agent will die..

Apart from that it was a lovely day
